Etymology

From Proto-Tocharian *käsk-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰn̥-sḱé, a form of *gʷʰen- (“to strike, slay, kill”). Cognate with English bane, Sanskrit घन (ghana, “killer, destroyer”), Latin *fendo, and many other derivatives of this root.
