Etymology
Disputed: either kész (“ready, available”) + pénz (“money”), a calque of Medieval Latin pecunia parata, or kéz (“hand”) + pénz (“money”), calque of Medieval Latin pecunia manualis (in the Latin used in Hungary). The former is corroborated by subsequent phonetic data; the later, by the alternative obsolete form kézi pénz.[1]
