Etymology

Cognate with Burmese ချပ် (hkyap, numerical classifier for flat objects) (<Old Burmese ခ္လပ် (khlap)). Possibly ultimately from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-lap (leaf), thus cognate with Old Chinese (OC *hljeb, *leb) ("leaf"), Tibetan ལོ་མ (lo ma, leaf) and Jingpho lap (leaf). Compare Lhao Vo khye' and Lashi khyab' .
