Cognate with Burmese ချပ် (hkyap, “numerical classifier for flat objects”) (<Old Burmese ခ္လပ် (khlap)). Possibly ultimately from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-lap (“leaf”), thus cognate with Old Chinese 葉 (OC *hljeb, *leb) ("leaf"), Tibetan ལོ་མ (lo ma, “leaf”) and Jingpho lap (“leaf”). Compare Lhao Vo khye' and Lashi khyab' .
