Zero-ending on the verb infinitive is due to apocope. In case of use of "nn:kløyvd infinitiv" spelling in standard Nynorsk, this verb should have an -e ending.

The letter "r" in Nynorsk/Bokmål-spelled words corresponds in most cases to /ʂ/ in Trøndelag dialect if it stands before s, k, t or p. Due to this change, the letter combination rk can be written as rsk in dialectal spelling.

The verb is attested with e both in Danish (sometimes spelled as knerke or even knærke instead of more common knirke) and the Norwegian dialects without this sound change (spelled as knerk-), but the /e/-sound in this cases will rather correspond to /æ/ in Trøndelag dialect. Therefore, the /e/-sound in knersk originates from an earlier /i/-sound.
