Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *k-la, borrowed from Proto-Mon-Khmer *klaʔ. Cognate with Burmese ကျား (kya:)(from Inscriptional Old Burmese က္လာ (kla)), Sichuan Yi (lat, tiger), Old Chinese (OC *qʰlaːʔ), Danba Horpa ɮi (tiger). Compare Lhao Vo lamo:, Zaiwa lo, Longchuan Achang lɔ³¹ and Hpon kălà.
