landesweit

German

Etymology

From Land (land, country, state) + -es- + weit (wide, far).

Pronunciation

  • (file)

Adjective

landesweit (strong nominative masculine singular landesweiter, not comparable)

  1. nationwide, national
Synonyms: national, (Germany and Austria) bundesweit
  2. (referring to Germany and Austria often) statewide, on the level of Bundesland

Usage notes

  • When used of countries other than Germany and Austria, the word always means “nationwide”. With these two countries it can also be used in the same sense, but as soon as there is any context implying a particular federal state, landesweit will be understood as “statewide” and bundesweit must be used to include the entire country.
