Borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Late Latin mastichinus (“gummy”)[1] (compare Romanian mesteacăn (“birch”), Sicilian mastigona (“piney thistle”)), from Ancient Greek μαστίχινος (mastíkhinos), from μαστίχη (mastíkhē, “mastic”).
