Macanese

Etymology

Univerbation of Portuguese criar or mal criar (literally bad raise). Compare Spanish malcriar (to spoil), malcriado (spoiled). Usage of ma- over mal- may be due to natural consonant dropping in Macanese, or it may be due to influence from the noun maquiaçám. Related to quiança and quiada, also displaying /kr/ → /k/.

Verb

maquiâ

  1. to spoil (a child)
