The Caighdeán Oifigiúil spelling of mudharlán (spelt muġarlán with unetymological lenited g in Patrick's Dineen's Foclóir Gaedhilge agus Béarla (1927)), an irregular change from mudharnán, from Old Irish mudornán (ankle), from Old Irish mudhorn (ankle) + -án (a diminutive suffix).[1]
