përtyp
Albanian
Etymology
From Proto-Albanian * ̊tupi-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewp- (“to push, beat”). Cognate to Ancient Greek τύππω (túppō, “to strike, beat”). A formation with the prefix për-.[1] The root vowel has undergone umlaut. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *teup (“to get down, conceal oneself”). Compare Lithuanian tūpiù (“to get down, lay on one's knees”), Old Norse Þopta (“thwart”), Gothic 𐌸𐌹𐌿𐍆𐍃 (þiufs, “thief”).[2]
