From Proto-Bahnaric *pnar, infixed derivative of Proto-Bahnaric *par (to fly). Analyzable as păr (to fly) + -ơn- (instrumental infix).

Formationally identical to Pacoh nnár, Khmu [Cuang] pnɨr, both "wing".
