pajtoj

Albanian

Alternative forms

  • paqoj, paqtoj

Etymology

From pajt (thanks to) + -oj.

According to Meyer and Miklosich "pajtoj" was borrowed from (unattested) Vulgar Latin *pāctāre, which derived from Latin pāx (peace). Latin pāx was borrowed into Albanian as paqe (peace) - from which actually the alternative terms paqtoj and paqoj derived.

Orel derives Albanian pajt (thanks to) to Latin (ablative) pactō; cf. Latin hoc pactō (this way), Latin aliō pactō (otherwise). Çabej on the other hand derives preposition pajt from Albanian për anë ("from the side of").[1]
