Borrowed from Anglo-Norman paroche, from Late Latin parochia, from Ancient Greek παροικίᾱ (paroikíā, “a dwelling abroad”), from πάροικος (pároikos, “neighboring, foreigner”), from παρά (pará, “beside”) + οἶκος (oîkos, “house”).
