Etymology
Sino-Vietnamese word from 福. Doublet of phúc.
Pronunciation
- (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [fɨək̚˧˦]
- (Huế) IPA(key): [fɨək̚˦˧˥]
- (Hồ Chí Minh City) IPA(key): [fɨək̚˦˥]
Usage notes
- Among the Southern Vietnamese Sino-Vietnamese readings that are still characteristically Southern and did not penetrate into the modern formal written language (like chánh (正), lãnh (領), etc.), thiệt (實), phước and tánh (性), etc.) are probably the few that still have their relevancy, while others, like sanh (生), nhơn (人), thạnh (盛), have mostly lost their ground to their Northern counterpart.
- Unlike Northern phúc, phước can not be used as an adjective.
