From Proto-Semai *rənẽẽʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *nrəjʔ ~ *nrəəj() ~ *rnəjʔ (pestle). Cognate with Koho rənaj, Khmer អង្រែ (ʼɑngrɛɛ), Khasi synrei, Riang tᵊnrɛʔ¹, Hu ŋʁíʔ, Vietnamese chày, Proto-Katuic *ʔndree (whence Pacoh ntray).
