Inherited from Ottoman Turkish سلاملامق (selamlamaḳ, to salute),[1][2] from سلام (selam), from Arabic سَلَام (salām), verbal noun of سَلِمَ (salima, to be safe, to be well),[3] morphologically selam + -la + -mak.
