From Middle High German siufzen, alteration (after the suffix -zen as in ächzen etc.) of earlier siuften, sūften, from Old High German sūftēn, sūft(e)ōn, from Proto-West Germanic *sūftēn, *sūftōn. Cognate with Dutch zuchten, Middle Low German süchten, süften.
