Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *štanga, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *st(h₂)eug-, from *steyh₂-. Compare Sanskrit स्त्यायते (styāyate, “it hardens”), Ancient Greek στῖον (stîon, “pebble”), Russian стена́ (stená, “wall”), Old English stān (“stone”). Alternatively cognate to Old Norse stinga (“to put, to stick”), Lithuanian sténgiu, sténgti (“to be able”), stingt (“it hardens”).[1]
