From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-k-ywal (jackal), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-k-jwal (jackal). Or from Bengali শিয়াল (śiẏal, jackal). Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-k-jwal (jackal) may be related to Sanskrit सृगाल (sṛgāla) (whence Bengali শিয়াল (śiẏal)). Cognate with Atong (India) sial (jackal).
