Etymology

Equivalent to skør (fragile) + bug (stomach), from Old Norse skyrbjúgr (scurvy), cognate with Norwegian skjørbuk, Swedish skörbjugg. A compound of skyr (sour milk) + bjúgr (swelling). The Old Norse word has been borrowed to Dutch scheurbuik, German Scharbock, and French scorbut (hence English scurvy and New Latin scorbutus).
