Etymology

16th century, from archaic stochen (“to stir, stoke”) +‎ -ern (frequentative suffix). Said verb is derived from Proto-West Germanic *stokōn (whence English stoke), possibly through Middle Low German stōken. See stochen for more. Ultimately related with stoßen (“to thrust”) and Stock (“stick”).
