Borrowed Russian субботник (subbotnik), from суббо́та (subbóta, “Saturday”).

  1. (historical) A Saturday designated for community volunteer work, such as cleaning the streets, after the October Revolution in Russia.
  2. A member of a Russian sect of Sabbath keepers.
