Borrowed from Malay sembelih (butcher an animal), from a metathesis of Arabic بِاسْمِ اللّٰه (bismi llāh, in the name of God). Compare Maranao sombali' (chant before butchering), Tausug sumbayꞌ (slaughter for eating), and Malagasy sombily (slaughter). See also the Islamic practice of dhabihah.
