From Proto-Ugric *tepɜ- (lose one's way, be wrong, err, make a mistake) [1] + -ed (frequentative suffix).[2] Cognates include Northern Mansi типуӈкве (tipuňkwe).

Usage notes

Out of the alternative forms tévedt and tévedett, the short form is used in the sense “to wander”, and the long form is used in the sense “to make a mistake” or “to be mistaken”. Examples:

A kisfiú egy sűrű erdőbe tévedt.The little boy wandered into a thick forest.
Harminc kérdésből egyszer sem tévedett.Out of thirty questions, he never made one mistake.
