Vietnamese

Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *k-raːŋʔ. Cognate with Tho [Cuối Chăm] kʰraːŋ³.

The developement of the initial (*C-r > ‹th›) is irregular in most varieties of Vietnamese, but regular in certain North(east)ern dialects. The expected reflex of the initial *k-r would be *‹s› in the "mainstream" dialects.
