From trăng (“moon”) + hoa (“flower”), calque of Chinese 花月 (hoa nguyệt), as in 風花雪月/风花雪月 (phong hoa tuyết nguyệt, literally “wind, flowers, snow and the moon”). Compare trăng gió.
