Etymology

From Middle Vietnamese 𣞾 (blàu), from Proto-Vietic *b-luː, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ml(əw) (betel). Cognate with Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects trù, Bahnar bơlŏu, Mon ဇဗၠူ (həplùˀ) and Khmer ម្លូ (mluu).

Compare the village name Phù Lưu 扶留 (MC bju ljuw), whose demotic name (tên Nôm) is Trầu/Giầu.
