Unknown, probably affixed *raṅ + ta-, probably from Proto-Mon-Khmer *raaŋʔ (“light, to shine”) (compare Vietnamese rạng (“to dawn; be brightened, be lightened”), Khmer ស្រាង (sraang, “to glimmer”)).
