Cognate with Latvian žul̂ts, Proto-Slavic *zьlčь. From Proto-Balto-Slavic *źulˀ-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃-.

The Lithuanian form underwent metathesis under the influence of tul̃žti (to become wet, swell, be angry).
