From Middle High German verzeren, verzern, vorzern, ferzeren, ferzern, forzern, from Old High German firzeran (“to tear up, consume”), from Proto-West Germanic *frateran (“to tear up, tear to shreds”), equivalent to ver- + zehren. Cognate with Middle Low German vörtēren (modern German Low German vertehren), Dutch verteren (“to consume, devour”), English fortear (“to tear up”).
