From Proto-Albanian *werdza, from Proto-Indo-European *wérǵʰ-e-ti, from *werǵʰ- (to bind, squeeze). Cognate with Lithuanian ver̃žti (to constrain, lace), Middle High German erwergen (to scrag, strangle), Latin urgere (to press).[1]
