Etymology
From Arabic شَهَرَ (šahara), أَشْهَرَ (ʔašhara, “to announce, spread, make public”). The contemporary sense developed in the context of death or specifically the announcement of a person’s passing by ritualised lamentation, which is found in some countries and formerly existed also in Malta.
