Software

Dell offers in-house Linux support for a subset of hardware, contributing to the dell-smm-hwmon kernel module (refer to it's documentation here) and providing native Linux utilities to control hardware on supported devices. These utilities include:

  • libsmbios a suite of programs for controlling hardware. Key programs include:
    • smbios-battery-ctl: Get and set battery charge configuration
    • smbios-keyboard-ctl: Control keyboard backlight illumination and light sensors
    • smbios-lcd-brightness: Set separate screen brightness for battery and mains
    • smbios-sys-info: Get and set service, asset and property tags
    • smbios-thermal-ctl: Get and set thermal modes - usually balanced, cool-bottom, quiet, and performance
    • smbios-wireless-ctl: Get and control the status of radio hardware
  • dell-command-configureAUR (cctk) enables BIOS configuration from userland. On some devices this is the only method for configuring and persisting custom battery charge behaviour.

ACPI platform_profiles are natively supported on newer kernels which enables setting thermal modes without Dell specific software.

Dell also makes firmware updates for some devices available via the Linux Vendor firmware Service (LVFS).
