Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁r̥h₂-tḗr, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁erh₂- (border, line), cognate with Hittite [script needed] (er-ḫa-aš /⁠erḫaš⁠/, line, boundary), Latin ōra (brim, edge, boundary), or perhaps borrowed from Sogdian 𐼰𐽀𐼹𐼰𐽀 (ʾrδʾr /⁠arδār⁠/, region), from Proto-Iranian *Hárdah (half, side; place).
