Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁r̥h₂-tḗr, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁erh₂- (“border, line”), cognate with Hittite [script needed] (er-ḫa-aš /erḫaš/, “line, boundary”), Latin ōra (“brim, edge, boundary”), or perhaps borrowed from Sogdian 𐼰𐽀𐼹𐼰𐽀 (ʾrδʾr /arδār/, “region”), from Proto-Iranian *Hárdah (“half, side; place”).
