Etymology

3rd person singular present form of εξυπακούομαι (exypakoúomai) a verb which is in use only as impersonal in 3rd persons. From εξ- (in) + υπακούω (obey). A calque of French être sous-entendu.[1] The Hellenistic Koine verbal adjective ἐξυπᾰκουστέον (exupakoustéon) had the sense "must be understood, must understand a word".
