Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *mъďa (weakening, abatement); equivalent to мъждя (mǎždja, to fade away) + (-a). Cognate with dialectal Russian мжа (mža, day dream), Czech mze pl (tuberculose) and akin to Russian ме́дленный (médlennyj, slow), Serbo-Croatian ма̏дал (unclear, blur), Slovene medel (weak, pale), Polish mdły (insipid, bland).
