Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *mъďa (“weakening, abatement”); equivalent to мъждя (mǎždja, “to fade away”) +‎ -а (-a). Cognate with dialectal Russian мжа (mža, “day dream”), Czech mze pl (“tuberculose”) and akin to Russian ме́дленный (médlennyj, “slow”), Serbo-Croatian ма̏дал (“unclear, blur”), Slovene medel (“weak, pale”), Polish mdły (“insipid, bland”).
