Etymology
Borrowed from Classical Persian زبان اردوی معلی (zubān-e urdū-e mu'allā, “language of the exalted camp”), as it was believed that in turkic camps, two languages were spoken - one being Persian, and the other what is now known as Urdu. Equivalent of زبان (zubān, “language”) + اردوئے معلی (urdū-e mu’allá, “camp of the royals, or royal camp”).
