From Ashokan Prakrit *𑀤𑁆𑀭𑀝𑁆 (*draṭ, to press), from a nasal-infixed verbal derivative or with spontaneous nasalisation. Cognate with Bengali ডাঁটা (ḍãṭa, to reprimand). See Marathi दाटणे (dāṭṇe, to thicken) for likely cognates with different semantic development.
