Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀼𑀭 (maggura​), from Sanskrit मद्गुर (madgúra), an r-extension of मद्गु (madgú, diver, loon), from Proto-Indo-European *mesg-ú-s (diver bird), from *mesg- (to plunge, to dip). Cognate with Assamese মাগুৰ (magur), Odia ମାଗୁର (magur), Magahi 𑂧𑂰𑂏𑂳𑂩 (māgur), Bhojpuri माँगुर (mā̃gur), Hindi मगुरी (magurī), Sinhalese මගුරා (magurā), and distantly, Latin mergō (I dip, immerse, sink) and Russian Москва́ (Moskvá, Moscow). Doublet of মগ্ন (mogno, busy, overwhelmed).
