From 鷲(わし) (washi, “eagle”) + 掴(つか)み (tsukami, “clutching, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 掴(つか)む (tsukamu, “to clutch”).”). The tsukami changes to zukami as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
