Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Subclass of the broader suffix *-nikъ, particularly formed on the basis of the past passive participle suffix *-anъ + *-ikъ.

Suffix

*-anikъ m

  1. From verbs in a-conjugation, predominantly forms agent nouns.
*posъlati (to send an envoy) + *-anikъ*posъlanikъ (envoy)
*pomazati (to anoint) + *-anikъ*pomazanikъ (anointed person)
*jьzbьrati (to choose, to select) + *-anikъ*jьzbьranikъ (elected person)
*jьzgъnati (to chase away) + *-anikъ*jьzgъnanikъ (exile)
*vъzpitati (to bring up) + *-anikъ*vъzpitanikъ (pupil)

Usage notes

  • Less productive.
  • In many cases, the derivation feels more natural if one applies *-ikъ directly onto the participle (X-anъX-anikъ).

Declension

  • *-anica f, *-aničьka f (feminine counter-parts)
