Etymology

Fientive derivative of *dьrtъ (old, ragged) + *-ěti, ultimately descending from Proto-Indo-European *derH- (to tear). Akin to Proto-Germanic *trudaną (to tread), Ancient Greek δέρνομαι (dérnomai).
