Onomatopoeic, from the nestling call *pi-pi + *-lę. Likely of Proto-Balto-Slavic origin, akin to Latvian pīle (“duck”), Lithuanian pỹlė (“duck”).
Compare also Proto-Slavic *pisklę (whence Polish pisklę) = *piskati (“to shriek”) + *-lę.
