Cognate with Burmese မီးခိုး (mi:hkui:, “smoke”), Old Chinese 熏 (*qʰun, “to smoke”), Nuosu ꃅꇴ (mu gu, “smoke”), Lisu ꓘꓴꓽ (kʰù, “smoke”), Tshangla མུ་གུ (mu gu, “smoke”), Tangut 𗿉 (*ɣju¹, “smoke”), Japhug tɤ-kʰɯ (“smoke”), Naxi meel kee (“smoke”), Jingpho wankhut (“smoke”). Compare Lhao Vo myi: khug', Zaiwa myikau, Longchuan Achang ni³¹xau³¹ and Hpon mèʔ kʰù ~ mìʔ kʰù. As seen in cognates, there exists a common structure "fire-smoke" in the vast majority of Tibeto-Burman languages, as well as in the Pela form below.
